Five-star Bafana thrash Congo

Bafana Bafana put on a dominant display to trash Congo-Brazzaville 5-0 in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The home team welcomed four changes in goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Grant Kekana, Bathusi Aubaas and Elias Mokwana from the last outing at South Sudan.

A dream start followed suit on 12 minutes where a corner by Oswin Appollis found Teboho Mokoena, who powered in the bottom-corner with supreme ease.

Mokoena remained fired up just before the half-hour mark when he combined with Appollis on the far side of the area and sent a first-time finish into the far corner.

The play was halted after spectator misbehaviour where two supporters were seen running onto the field soon after the host had scored the second, which saw the referee suspend the clash for over ten minutes.

When the game resumed, Bafana continued to dominate and were further in front when another pin-point corner from Appollis entered the heart of the area and saw Aubaas head in the bottom-corner.

There was no reprieve for the Congolese after halftime and succumbed to a fourth goal when Lyle Foster ran in at the near post to tuck in a first-time pass from Mokwana.

Chances continued going way with little threat from the visitors as Foster drew a point-blank save from Cristoffer Mafoumbi through a close-range effort a few minutes later.

Bafana introduced a double substitution at the same time, with Foster removed for Iqraam Rayners before Relebohile Mofokeng came in ahead of Appollis.

The one-way traffic continued as Rayners pounced on a howler right in the area from Mafoumbi and fired into an empty net.

Congo looked to find a consolation in the closing stages, but strong goalkeeping by Williams stood in their way as the host cruised to a resounding victory.

Confirmed line-ups:

South Africa: Williams, Mudau, Kekana, Dortley, Modiba, Aubaas, Mokoena, Appollis, Zwane, Foster, Mokwana

Subs: Chaine, Goss, Mobbie, Basadien, Le Roux, Mofokeng, Maswanganyi, Kwayiba, Rayners, Sibisi, Sesane, Morena
