Tuchel said of his new job: "I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team.

"I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.

"Working closely with Anthony [Barry] as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud.

"I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark [Bullingham, FA CEO] and John [McDermott, England men's technical director], for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together."

The German tactician, who will be joined in the England set-up by former Chelsea assistant coach Anthony Barry, is understood to have been in competition with Graham Potter, Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola for the position, but managed to edge them to the position.

The Spaniard was said to have initially attracted the interest of the Football Association as their top candidate for the role, especially as he is currently in the last year of his contract at Manchester City, but is now said to be considering extending his stay at the club by another year.

Tuchel, meanwhile, became the Association's preferred candidate not only because of his availability after leaving Bayern Munich in June, but also because of his proven track record of winning trophies, which is thought to have been one of the criteria for the position.

The coach, who is understood to have signed an 18-month deal with the Three Lions, has achieved considerable success at club level, winning league titles during his time at Ligue 1 outfit Paris Saint Germain and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, as well as winning the UEFA Champion League during his spell at Chelsea.
