Bafana Bafana's 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph is one of the most treasured moments in South African history, as a signed jersey from that particular triumph has now sold for a staggering R9 000! Here's a look.
The story
On Friday 18 October, it was a moment of blissful nostalgia as organisers Ex Pro brought together a special guest list of former professional South African athletes, enthusiasts, and affiliates alike.
Hosted at the lush Kelvin Grove in Newlands in Cape Town, the event was headlined by Stormers head coach John Dobson, who took time out to speak at the event despite his side preparing for a big clash against Munster on the United Rugby Championship.

The event, which is also a fundraiser for various underprivileged communities and organisations, hosted an auction for several iconic sports memorabilia and exciting holiday getaways to luxurious resorts in the Drakensburg Mountains
However, one standout moment was the lofty sale of the Bafana Bafana 1996 jersey, which clearly boasts a long-lasting legacy in the hearts of South Africans.
With an opening bid of R1 000, one individual immediately raised the bid to R5 000 but that was definitely not the end of it.
The shirt is signed by various members of that triumphant Bafana team, including Shaun Bartlett, Phil Masinga, and Lucas Radebe.
The shirt was adorned in a richly antique frame, signifying the sheer historic significance with a touch of nostalgic charm.
Ultimately, the winning bidder agreed to a R9 000 purchase of the shirt, an astonishing figure for those who may have underestimated the worth of that 1996 AFCON success.
The current crop of Bafana players clearly have massive shoes to fill in comparison to the generation of Doctor Khumalo.
