Former African star arrested in shock fraud case

A former African star has been arrested for his shock involvement in a fraud case. 

Ex-Egypt international Aly Ghazal has been arrested in Cairo on allegations of embezzling seven million Egyptian pounds (around R2 million), according to KingFut.

The 32-year-old defender was apprehended in New Cairo after a complaint was filed with authorities.

A man claimed Ghazal and an accomplice defrauded him under the guise of investing in an import-export company,

The pair are alleged to have failed to deliver their promised returns.

It has been said that Cairo's security department launched an investigation into the matter, with a police report being filed.

The public prosecution is believed to now be handling the case.

The former defender accumulated 11 appearances for the Egyptian national side, also taking part at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. 

He had represented various European clubs, including Portuguese sides Nacional and Feirense, and Greek outfit AE Larisa, before returning to Egypt in 2020.

In his home country, Ghazal represented Smouha and El Makasa before retiring at Wadi Degla last year.

Earlier this year, he had announced that he would be making his managerial debut with Egyptian third-division side Ra FC.
