Chiefs ‘drop’ FNB Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs will take an increased number of home games that they will host while on the road compared to the last two seasons.

Last season, Chiefs played 11 home matches in the league at FNB Stadium, then two each at Peter Mokaba and Moses Mabhida, where they have partnership agreements.

The previous season, they played 10 at FNB, three at Peter Mokaba, and two at Moses Mabhida

All 15 home games for the 2021/22 campaign were played at FNB Stadium with most of the fixtures played in empty stadiums due to COVID-19.

Of their opening five league games this season, the Soweto giants have only played at home (at FNB Stadium) once, which was the 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of September.

When Amakhosi return to action next week on Wednesday, they will be the home team at Peter Mokaba Stadium as they welcome Richards Bay FC.

According to the PSL fixtures list, they will remain at the venue for their next game as they host Royal AM on November 30, before playing Polokwane City as the away team at the adjacent Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on December 8.

Chiefs' next home match will be at Moses Mabhida Stadium against Chippa United on December 29.

They will only finally return to FNB Stadium on January 8 when they welcome Stellenbosch FC.

Nasreddine Nabi's men will play their next home match on January 12 against Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida, where they will also host Sekhukhune United a week later.

Next for the Glamour Boys will be the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium as the away team on February 1 and they will remain there when AmaZulu FC visit three days later and for the match against SuperSport United, Magesi FC, and Cape Town City.

The TS Galaxy game will be at Peter Mokaba Stadium, before games against Marumo Gallants, Orlando Pirates, and Polokwane City get to be played at FNB Stadium.

Based on these fixtures, as many as six of Chiefs' home games will not be at FNB Stadium this season.

Most of the nine home games at FNB in the league will be in the second round of the season.

There has always been attendance issues at the 94 700-seater facility when Chiefs play all other teams besides Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
