DUE CREDIT: Broos gets his name into Bafana history

Last night, Hugo Broos got to enjoy just how peaceful his sleep should be at the age of 72 with Bafana Bafana through to the AFCON finals with two games to spare.

With the qualification job done, Broos becomes the first ever coach to guide Bafana through two consecutive successful AFCON qualification campaigns.

No other coach has done this since South Africa's readmission to FIFA in 1992.

After failing in the 1994 qualifiers, Mzansi played three games during the 1996 qualifiers when SA was awarded hosting rights for the tournament, which they went on to win with Clive Barker in charge.

For the 1998 competition in Burkina Faso, they went through as holders (no qualifiers) and had Jomo Sono in charge as they lost in the final.

Then in the year 2000, Bafana played all games in the qualifiers and went through as winners in Group 4 under Trott Moloto.

For the start of the 2002 AFCON qualifiers, it was Moloto in charge, but he was replaced by Carlos Queiroz after one match.

Queiroz qualified and took Bafana to the quarterfinals.

The 2004 qualifiers had Shakes Mashaba in charge of the qualification campaign, but for the tournament, it was the late Styles Phumo calling the shots.

With the 2006 qualifiers, it was Stuart Baxter on the wheel, but Ted Dumitru was in charge at the finals.

Pitso Mosimane stood in at the start of the 2008 qualifiers, before Carlos Alberto Parreira took over and went to the finals in Ghana, where Bafana Bafana couldn't get out of the group stage.

Then came Joel Santana, who failed to make it to the 2010 AFCON finals, before Parreira came back with the World Cup looming.

After that, Bafana failed to qualify in 2012 under Pitso Mosimane and then played in 2013 as hosts with Gordon Igesund in charge.

In 2015, it was Shakes Mashaba from the first game of the qualifiers all the way to the tournament.

Stuart Baxter came in from the first qualifier for the 2019 AFCON through to the quarterfinals of the actual tournament in Egypt.

When Hugo Broos stepped in after Bafana had failed to qualify for the 2021 AFCON finals, he put his head on the block for the 2023 qualifiers.

Qualification was not only achieved but the Belgian guided the senior national team to a medal finish (third place) at the tournament for the first time since the year 2000.

The 2025 qualification has now been achieved with two games to spare, against Uganda and South Sudan, in Group K.
