The former Orlando Pirates star is said to have died at his home in Atteridgeville, after spending the latter years of his life confined to a wheelchair.

Moripe is also understood to have suffered a stroke several years ago, which took a massive toll on his health.

Tributes from various South African clubs and sports personalities poured in after his passing, as he was widely regarded as one of the best players the country has produced.

The head of CAF, Motsepe, has now extended a heartfelt tribute to the fallen icon.

A statement on CAFOnline read: "The Confédération Africaine de Football ('CAF') President Dr Patrice Motsepe is deeply saddened by the passing of South African football icon Lucas 'Masterpiece' Moripe.

"'Masterpiece' Moripe played for a number of top South African clubs. It was at Pretoria Callies where he made his mark and also at Orlando Pirates.

"In 2010, the Atteridgeville Super Stadium was renamed to the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium to honour his legacy.

"The CAF President Dr Motsepe conveys his and CAF's deepest condolences to the family of Lucas 'Masterpiece' Moripe, the South African Football Association (SAFA), and the South African football family.

"May Lucas 'Masterpiece' Moripe's soul rest in eternal peace."
