EXPLAINED: Chiefs player's Royal 'escape'

A Kaizer Chiefs player was supposed to be given a red card during the side's 2-2 draw against Royal AM, according to renowned former referee Victor Hlungwani.

The Soweto giants were denied their fourth win of the season by a late surge from Thwihli Thwahla at New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

First-half goals from Ashley Du Preez and Wandile Duba were cancelled out in the second half by Ayabulela Maxwele and Levy Mashiane.

The match could have  turned a lot more sour, though, for Chiefs as Hlungwani has revealed that midfielder Njabulo Blom should received his marching orders in the 78th minute when he fouled Royal AM's Sabelo Sithole.

"A wrong card was given here because all DOGSO (denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity) elements have been completed here," Hlungwani said while reviewing the match on SABC's SoccerZone.

"You can see Jelly Chavani issuing a yellow. So, that was supposed to be a red card because if you can check, it's almost one one-on-one with the goalkeeper. There is no other player except the goalkeeper.

"A hand is used, and a leg is used to trip him or to impede him. Therefore, it was an incorrect decision by the referee Jelly Chavani," he explained.

With the result, Chiefs slipped down to seventh on the log after seven matches played and they will be aiming to return to winning form when taking on Polokwane City on Sunday.
