Bafana on the wrong end of CAF Goal of the Year award

With the 2024 CAF Awards taking place next month, Bafana Bafana find themselves on the wrong end of the Goal of the Year shortlist. 

The body for football on the continent released the nominees for the category that is bound to excite people, with the remarkable catalogue of goals reminding the world of the delightful moments that took place in African football over the course of the year.

The shortlist was created by an expert CAF Technical Panel features 11 goals scored in CAF competitions between January and October 2024. 

Fans can get involved in choosing the winner as the confederation has created a platform on its official website, where votes can be casted until Thursday, 12 December. 

The votes by the fans will count for 70%  of the overall score, while the other 30 will be decided by CAF's Technical Experts. 

One of the goals in contention was scored by Algeria star Yassine Benzia during an international friendly against South Africa at the Nelson Mandela Stadium back in March. 

The goal, in which he receives the ball with his back to goal before lifting it up and finding the back of the net with a bicycle kick, was also nominated for a FIFA Puskas Award. 

The 11 nominees for CAF Goal of the Year 2024:

Ibrahim Adel (Egypt) – Mauritania vs Egypt (TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 Qualifiers)

Kevin Pina (Cape Verde) – Cape Verde vs Mozambique (TotalEnergies AFCON 2023)

Cristovao Mabululu (Angola) – Angola vs Namibia (TotalEnergies AFCON 2023)

Nene Dorgeles (Mali) – Mali vs Côte d'Ivoire (TotalEnergies AFCON 2023)

Saïd Benrahma (Algeria) – Algeria vs Togo (TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 Qualifiers)

Sébastien Haller (Côte d'Ivoire) – Nigeria vs Côte d'Ivoire (TotalEnergies AFCON 2023)

Wessam Abou Ali (Al Ahly) – Al Ahly vs TP Mazembe (TotalEnergies CAFCL)

Yassine Benzia (Algeria) – Algeria vs South Africa (FIFA Series 2024 Algeria)

The winner will be announced during the CAF Awards Gala in Marrakech, Morocco, scheduled for Monday 16 December 2024.
