Pirates & Al Ahly fire blanks at sold out Orlando Stadium

Orlando Pirates and Al Ahly could not be separated after playing to a goalless in the CAF Champions League on Saturday afternoon.

Paseka Mako and Monnapule Saleng were back in the Buccaneers line-up following Sunday's loss to Stellenbosch FC, while Ahly named Bafana international Percy Tau on the bench.

The Egyptian giants looked to put the South African curse to bed and eventually secure a win in the country, as they looked quite lively in the early stages of the first hlaf.

Most of the play centred extensively in the middle of the park where fierce tackling by Emam Ashour, Thalente Mbatha and Makhehlene Makhaula reigned in.

Pirates displayed a lot of character later towards halftime as a spate of forward entries in-turn saw a succession of corner-kicks coming their way.

Saleng came close to breaking the deadlock five minutes to the break when his first-time volley had Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy in a spot of bother.

The Buccaneers were out flying in the second half, hoping to register the opener through another decent drive by Saleng but the defence cleared for a corner.

Pirates didn't stop piling forward later on and a trademark long-range drive by Mbatha shaved past the bottom-corner of El Shenawy's goal.

El Shenawy was put to work past the 60th minute when he pulled across his area to court a pin-point header by Relebohile Mofokeng and keep the score goalless.

Bafana Bafana international Tau was introduced at the same time and came on for Wessam Abou Ali, with Mohamed Magdy also brought on in place of Ashour.

Ahly showed a lot of promise in the closing stages and drew a strong powerful save from Sipho Chaine off substitute Hussein El Shahat's shot.

The Soweto giants were pushed to the brink as the visitors were desperate for the winner, but goalless it finished.
