In this edition of Secret Footballer, a Premier Soccer League coach shares a story of how he once lost a job at the 11th hour to an unknown colleague.
"I once shook hands with a PSL club chairman in the morning, thinking I was sealing a contract deal, but in the evening, he called, informing me the deal was off," The coach tells KickOff.com.
"Before that, I had two Zoom meetings with the chairman. The first meeting was with him alone, and the second one was with the club's executive committee of five or six members.
"Immediately after the second meeting he sent me the contracts and stuff, I was happy with it, so I signed it, and sent it back to him, but while I was waiting for him to send me back a copy of the contract with his signature on... that evening he announced one of the unknown plumbers from Europe as the club's new head coach.
"In the news, he went on about the new coach being a long-time target because of his experience he has in Africa...
"I gave him a call, 'Chairman, are you serious? Which Africa? Coaching six months in an African country and not winning any silverware shouldn't be classified as having an experience in Africa,'
"All this is being done while me and the chairman have agreed on anything. But just like that, I was back on an unemployment queue.
"There is a lot of backstabbing taking place in this industry, and the club owners don't care about loyalty. In coaching, not even a contract can protect you."
