Another hurdle in Chiefs' Appollis chase

In addition to competition from rivals, Kaizer Chiefs will face another hurdle in their pursuit of Polokwane City and Bafana Bafana attacker Oswin Appollis.

The speedy attacker found himself at the centre of a transfer storm n the July transfer window as bids from multiple clubs, both locally and internationally, were tabled for his club's attention.

Espérance Sportive de Tunis and MC Alger led the race, but the North African duo saw their advances ignored by the Polokwane City hierarchy.

Mamelodi Sundowns reportedly made a late effort to sign Appollis but also found no joy in their efforts.

Amakhosi expressed their interest, although are understood to have put in no formal offer, with City having taken a clear stance that they intend to keep their prized winger.

"We would love to have him, we've had talks with the chairman of Polokwane City [Johnny Mogaladi], not only about Oswin but other players also. It's a process that's ongoing," Chiefs' Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. said back in August.

"I understand when coaches get frustrated if clubs mention their players in the media, we respectfully don't do that, but it doesn't mean we're not working as hard as we can on bringing these top talents."

With another transfer window rolling up, interest in Appollis has continued.

His performances, particularly for Bafana  Bafana, have only made him a bigger prospect and sent his market value through the roof.

Appollis has two goals and four assists in his last five matches for the national team, a huge step up from the single assist in four games he registered for the national team last season.

Any club that holds genuine interest will be expected to cough up an even higher fee than what they would have paid in the last window due to the player's ever-skyrocketing value.

That is the major challenge that lies ahead of Chiefs - who are still expected to make a move for the 23-year-old, according to insiders.

They will also still face competition from both Sundowns, and more recently, Orlando Pirates - who both have the advantage of offering Appollis CAF Champions League football over a Glamour Boys side desperately struggling to find their feet this season.
