REPORT: Why Benzema could make shock retirement

It is now reported that 2022 Ballon d'Or award winner Karim Benzema could be set for a shock retirement at the end of the season.

It could be argued that the former France star has not met the lofty expectations placed on his shoulders since his mega-money move to Saudi Arabia.

The centre-forward left Real Madrid as a free agent in June 2023, and he immediately joined Al Ittihad on a three-year deal worth a reported €100 million (R1.8 billion) per season.

Since then, Benzema has only registered 23 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions, while he has also had some off-field issues at the club, with reports of him voluntarily missing training on a few occasions last term.

Moreover, there were also reports that he has not seen eye-to-eye with some of his coaches at the club, including Nuno Espirito Santo and Marcelo Gallardo.

It is now claimed that the 36-year-old star is considering retirement at the end of the season despite his contract at Al Ittihad expiring in June 2026, according to Relevo.

The publication suggests that Benzema already has an eye on a potential next job, with an ambassador role at Real being already mooted.

It is said that the Spanish giants see an opportunity to expand their brand in the Middle East region, and Benzema could be a fitting representative of the club in the Arab area.

It is further noted that the striker has an excellent relationship with Los Blancos president Florentino Perez, with the two parties said to have a pact.

Benzema made an incredible 648 appearances for Real, registering 354 goals and 165 assists, according to Transfermarkt.
