Arsenal sink Brentford to close in on Liverpool

Arsenal started the new year on a high after rallying from behind to defeat Brentford 3-1 on Wednesday night.

The Gunners made four changes from the side that defeated Ipswich over the weekend, with Ethan Nwaneri, Thomas Partey, Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori brought back into the side.

The Bees got off to the perfect start when Bryan Mbeumo collected a pass from Mikkel Damsgaard before surging into the box and firing in at David Raya's near post.

The lead was nearly doubled their lead advantage after 26 minutes but Raya produced a stunning save on the line to keep out Keane Lewis-Potter's powerful effort.

Mikel Arteta's men regained dominance thereafter but had to wait until the 30th minute for the equaliser when goalkeeper Mark Flekken parried Party's shot into the path of Gabriel Jesus, who nodded home from close range.

The visiting side completed the turnaround five minutes after the break from their trademark corner situations, with Merino finishing off from close range after Flekken's disappointing punch out.

Arsenal grabbed a third goal three minutes later, as Gabriel Martinelli secured his fifth league goal of the season with a lovely volley after Brentford failed to clear their lines.

The third goal seemingly knocked the win out of Brentford's sail for the remainder of the second half as they were unable to carve out another good chance.

The Gunners now move back to second spot, six points behind league leaders Liverpool ahead of their next assignment away to Brighton and Hove Albion.
