'Amazing' Salah backed for 2025 Ballon d'Or

A former Liverpool star has backed Mohamed Salah to be among the contenders for this year's Ballon d'Or.

Former AC Milan and Arsenal star George Weah remains the only African footballer to win the Ballon d'Or after doing so in 1995.

Salah has been nominated for the Ballon d'Or on three occasions, with his highest finish coming in  2019 when he was ranked fifth, while Senegal star Sadio Mane was fourth.

Former reds defender Jamie Carragher believes on current form, the Egyptian has a good chance of winning the award this year.

"Salah's goal and assist tally is consistently amazing and there is no bigger admirer of his talent than me, regardless of what his fan club on social media might say," Carragher wrote in his latest Telegraph column.

"Salah has stated in the past that he wants to become the second African to win the Ballon d'Or after George Weah did so in 1995. I think he has a great chance."

Meanwhile, former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves says Salah and Cole Palmer are the players of the season so far in the Premier League.

"I'm going to say Mo Salah and I'll say Cole Palmer a close second, I think to be the best player, you've got to be in the top team, within reason," he said on  Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.

"I'm basing it on the fact that Liverpool are top of the league and his output is better than anyone's goals and assists. I'd say Cole Palmer is just behind.
