In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, KickOff catches up with former Kaizer Chiefs attacking midfielder Frank Makua.
Makua shares that he was only able to buy his first car in the year 2000.
My First School Experience:
"I was at Hlalanikahle Primary School in Witbank. I was afraid, it was my first time in a classroom. I was still a young boy."
My First Kiss:
"I was 17 years old. She was my girlfriend."
My First Favourite Club:
"It was Kaizer Chiefs. I fell in love with the way players like Teenage Dladla and Sputla Nhlapo played the game. My father was the biggest Chiefs fan. I'm one of the lucky few players for whom the club's chairman, Kaizer Motaung, personally came to my home to sign me for Chiefs. When he arrived, my father couldn't believe it was really him, a player he admired all his life. I was recommended by the club's former doctor, the late Phil Maepa."
My First Soccer Boots:
"I had Jomo Sono King boots. Eish, those things were heavy! It was even worse once they got soaked. They were bought for me by the owner of one of the clubs I played for, my father never bought me soccer boots."
My First Goal:
"It was against QwaQwa Stars at Rand Stadium in 1995. Thabang Lebese was on the left, playing a one-two with Isaac Kungwane, who spotted me making a run and unleashed a good through ball and I struck it immediately when it reached me, and it went in, from outside the box."
My First Individual Award:
"In my first year in the PSL, I became both Rookie of the Month and Rookie of the Year."
My First Trophy With A Club:
"I won the Iwisa Maize Meal Spectacular with Kaizer Chiefs in 1996."
My First Car:
"I got my first car in the year 2000. I was too scared to drive initially, but I eventually bought my own car to practice driving. This decision came after taxis had mistreated me for quite some time. It was a Golf GTI, and I bought it for R90,000."
