'PSL teams didn't want to touch me'

In this edition of Where Are They Now, former Maritzburg United and Jomo Cosmos player Devon Saal shares insights on his experiences after receiving feedback from Premier Soccer League teams that he was considered un-coachable.

The 31-year-old reveals his biggest regret in life during an interview with KickOff.

Who is Devon Saal?

"He's got two different personalities. On the field, he's a bit aggressive and outspoken. Off the field, he's a jokester and a fun person to be around. I'm from Mitchell's Plain in Cape Town."

Reflecting on Your Playing Days:

"My biggest achievement was making it into the PSL. I made my debut against Free State Stars while playing for Maritzburg. I am a midfielder, although some mistakenly think I play as a left winger."

Did You Make Money from Soccer?

"Yes, definitely. I earned good money and consider myself fortunate to have been taught from a young age how to manage my finances."

Where Are You Living Now?

"I'm back home in Mitchell's Plain. It's been a difficult few years since leaving Jomo Cosmos. I faced challenges both financially and in trying to find a club to play for at my current age."

Your Current Job?

"I dropped down to the first division three years ago. There was a time when I didn't want to play football anymore. I was not enjoying going for trials due to the constant negative feedback related to my past experiences. This was after the situation at Maritzburg, where I had a minor fallout with coach Fadlu. It blew up in the media, leading teams to believe that I was uncoachable and had an attitude problem, which caused them to shy away from signing me.

"Then there was my experience at Jomo Cosmos, and after that, I thought football might not be for me. When players are not paid on time or have their contracts terminated for non-football-related reasons, it really takes the passion out of the game.

"I am currently playing in the ABC Motsepe League for Hanover Park. There is some incentive, but it's not significant."

If You Could Do It Again?

"I have no regrets in football. The only regret I have is missing my sister's wedding. I chose to play a match the day before her wedding, and our team, Milano, missed our flight back to Cape Town."
