Shalulile seals CAFCL quarter-final spot for Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns qualified for the CAF Champions League quarter-finals following a 1-1 draw against AS FAR on Sunday evening.

After his telling impact from the bench at AS Maniema, the South African champions partnered Peter Shalulile alongside Iqraam Rayners and Lucas Ribeiro.

Shalulile came good once more when he found space in the six-yard area in the 12th minute to head a curling free-kick from Ribeiro into the top corner.

The Namibian nearly extended the lead courtesy of a half-volley from the centre of the area, but he couldn't get the better of Ayoub El Khayati on this particular occasion.

Sundowns continued to have the majority of the chances towards the latter phases through Thapelo Morena, Marcelo Allende, Teboho Mokoena and Sphelele Mkhulise.

Black Army remained courageous despite trailing where the off-the-ball running and forceful patterns by Orebonye caused the Brazilians to hold a tight shape all-round.

Masandawana were buoyant after the break and could've doubled the lead through a clever effort from a tight angle by Rayners, but he found the side-netting.

The Black Army, who finished runners-up out in the Botola league last season, remained confidence and threatened a response on a couple of occasions through Youssef El Fahli.

Sundowns were given a huge scare though midway through the second half when a defensive clearance involving Ribeiro following a free-kick came bounced off the woodwork.

El Fahli should've levelled in the latter minutes from a stray pass by Williams, but he fired in the side-netting from an awkward angle in the box.

Substitutions for the Masandawana saw Rayners removed for Tashreeq Matthews and Mkhulise hauled out for Neo Maema.

The North Africans found the reply five minutes from time when a cross from the left picked out El Amine Zouhzouh to side-foot in the near post to seal a point and top spot in Group B, while Sundowns had to settle for second spot.

Confirmed line-ups:

Mamelodi Sudnowns: Williams, Khoza, Kekana, Lunga, Mokoena, Allende, Mkhulise, Morena, Ribeiro, Rayners, Shalulile

Subs: Onyango, Lebusa, Sales, Maema, Mashego, Lethlaku, Matthews, Johannes, Maboe
