In this edition of My Muti Story, a former SuperSport United star reveals to KickOff how the fear of Black Leopards' muti led them to use the team's bus as their changing room.
Richard Jantjie, who played for SuperSport United among other teams, recalls a day when even the club's trusted holy water couldn't compete with the powerful muti of Lidoda Duvha.
Who and where?
"I remember that at SuperSport United, the only things we used for protection against opponents' muti were the ZCC tea and holy water."
Why were you doing it?
"I don't know exactly, but it had to do with our protection."
Then what happened?
"I remember playing an away game against Black Leopards in Venda, Limpopo.
"There was nothing that our tea and holy water could not deal with until that day in Venda.
"When we arrived at the dressing room, we encountered something very strange. Our change room was filled with soil, starting from the entrance and extending all the way inside.
"There was also some black liquid sprinkled all over the floor and some on the walls.
"We stood at the door, scared to go in, waiting for instructions from our coach, Pitso Mosimane, and his assistant at the time, the late Thomas Madigage.
"But even they decided, instead of pouring holy water over the mess, that we should get dressed on the team bus to avoid stepping on it.
"We looked at the home team's changing room, and there was something burning inside; it was filled with smoke."
Did the game take place?
"Yes, it did, under difficult circumstances. Such things do affect your mind as players."
What was the result?
"We drew that game 0-0. So I think the muti didn't work for them on that day.
"And back then, Black Leopards was one of the hottest teams in our league. They had players like Mulondo Sikhwivhilu.
"But I don't think the muti affected us that day, because we were used to such occurrences in our football."
