Cardoso lays down rule for amateur opponents

Miguel Cardoso has detailed what comes with preparing for the kind of opposition that they will be up against on Saturday in the Nedbank Cup.

Mamelodi Sundowns welcome ABC Motsepe League (third tier) club Sibanye Golden Stars in what appears a walk in the park on paper.

The match at Loftus (18:00) will pit full-time footballers against the Free State province part-timers, who have jobs in the mine.

"It is an opponent that we went to see live, and we now have much more information than before," says Cardoso.

"It is a match that we need to play with big respect like all the matches that we play considering our opponents and not where they come from but what they want from the match.

"If you look at where they come from, then you make mistakes in how to approach the match.

"We will approach the game in a serious way because we don't want to be surprised.

"This is not respect for the opponent but ourselves, and the competition which we want to play to win.

"You don't prepare players for these kind of matches on the day before the match.

"You prepare the attitude on a regular basis and that is what we have been doing since we arrived at the club so that we understand that it is not a matter of who you play against.

"It is constructing an attitude more than just finding the motivation to play that match.

"I don't believe in short-term motivation and external motivation.

"I believe in drive, pursuit, and attitude as a way to live.

"If you live according to these values, that is the way you are going to behave all the time.

"That is how I see myself as a coach.

"The team is overcoming difficulties because we are trying to shape character and if character is shaped the right way, then I believe the match will be held at that same level," details the Portuguese gaffer.
