Downs defender returning to Europe

Rushine De Reuck is returning to Europe for a second spell exactly four years since he joined Mamelodi Sundowns from Maritzburg United.

De Reuck arrived at Sundowns in January 2021 after the late agent Russell Louise had engineered the revival of his career from the lower division in Cape Town to Maritzburg.

Such were the difficulties faced by the 28-year-old prior to his move to Maritzburg that he had unsuccessful trials at Mbombela United, Milano United, Cape Town All Stars, and Ajax Cape Town, before he ended up at Hellenic in the ABC Motsepe League.

This happened after he had spent time at Portuguese club Pacos de Ferreira's B team, where he was coached by Paulo Fonseca and had current Liverpool striker Digo Jota as his teammate.

The lad from Kalksteenfontein in Cape Town will now be moving back to Europe, where he will spend the rest of the season at Maccabi Petah Tikva in Israel.

Petah Tikva have the second-worst defensive record and will hope the arrival of De Reuck helps strengthen at the back.

This move comes after local loan options couldn't be worked out with Sundowns settling for the Israel deal.

De Reuck is not expected back at Sundowns with the club having made other plans for a central defender replacement.

The Israel loan deal comes with an option depending on what happens until the end of the season.

Should an agreement be reached between the clubs mid-year, then De Reuck will stay on subject to personal terms.
