'Clive Barker spotted me when I was 15'

In this edition of In The Spotlight, KickOff speaks to former Premier Soccer League striker George Koumantarakis.

The Greece-born former Bafana Bafana international explains why no player in the PSL has impressed him so far.

Growing up, who was your idol?

"For me, it was Johan Cruyff. That's the person I wanted to play like and look like."

Is he the player you modelled your game on?

"Yeah, growing up, that's what I wanted to be."

Which club did you support before turning professional?

"AmaZulu. I grew up in KZN, and AmaZulu was a massive club. They would get 45,000 spectators even in friendly games.

"Joe Mlaba, Ace Nzimande, Joel Faya... Watching them made me wonder if I would ever get there. I was lucky enough to even play with them, I was living my dream."

What was your breakthrough into top-flight football?

"Clive Barker spotted me when I was 15, playing in the amateur ranks. I played well against a team he was coaching, and the following year, I was the top goalscorer in the third division. He signed me up for AmaZulu at 17."

Who is your best friend in football?

"Nah, I didn't have any. I didn't stay long at clubs, I used to move around a bit. Manning Rangers was the longest I was at a club, and Basel, of course."

Is there anything you dislike about football?

"I don't like how players disrespect the referees. That needs to change, and it needs to change quickly. Rugby is a good example, only the captain talks with the referee."

Who is your favourite player in South Africa at the moment?

"I don't have any. I like strikers, but at the moment, none of them are impressive. There are not too many strikers that stand out in the game right now."

If you could join any club in the PSL as a player again, which club would it be?

"Sundowns. It's the most professional. Players in South Africa are still not respected by the management of clubs, while Sundowns have gone the extra mile for their players, and it shows."

If you could stay anywhere in the world, which country would it be?

"I was born in Greece, and it's still one of the most beautiful countries. The food, the people... Greece is an amazing country."
