Cardoso: What I told Ribeiro when I arrived...

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has revealed his message to in-form attacker Lucas Ribeiro as the Brazilian star continues to set the Betway Premiership scene alight.

Ribeiro has arguably been the best player in the PSL this season and the numbers tell a similar story, with seven goals and five assists in 12 league appearances for Sundowns.

Speaking at the post-match press conference following a 3-0 win over rivals SuperSport United in the Tshwane Derby on Wednesday, Cardoso revealed that he had a tête-a-tête with the 26-year-old when he took over from Manqoba Mngqithi.

"One of the things I said to Lucas when I arrived here, knowing that he was performing in the league, was to try and tell him there's always things that can be done," Cardoso said.

"So, I try to make him understand that the ambition he should have: to develop himself, to be present every day of his life.

"We work hard on the mindset of the players, and I think the message is entering most of them – with commitment, with work, with a strong mindset of getting better, with respect of everyday work, waking [up] every day thinking this is the day I need to give my best. Lucas can go further on.

"We should profit as much as possible while we can from him and let's hope the club can keep him for long because he is a very important player.

"But Lucas is a player to play in the high level, internationally, no doubt."

Ribeiro will likely feature and get another opportunity to display his class when Sundowns host second-placed Orlando Pirates at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 15:30.
