Tinkler urges Maswanganyi to be 'more serious'

With reported interest on Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi, former Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has suggested what 'Tito' needs to improve in his game to make it in Europe.

Maswanganyi has reportedly attracted interest from clubs in Portugal, as he continues to shine for Pirates.

The former Oliveirense midfielder, a Portuguese club that reportedly has shown serious interest to lure him back overseas, has bounced back from his alleged disciplinary issues, playing a big role in Bucs showing good form in the league, Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League.

Although 'Tito' scored a brace in the recent 3-1 win over Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup last 32, there was a moment he gave the ball away cheaply trying to showboat, with the score at 2-1, and opposition had a break attack.

Luckily for the Soweto giants, they were not punished.

Tinkler says the 26-year-old, who likes to rally the crowd by showboating, has to improve his decision-making in doing his tricks, if he is to make it in Europe.

"Maswanganyi is very talented, but I think he needs to choose his moments when to use those skills and when not to use those skills, and there are occasions where I think he needs to be better in terms of his decision-making, in terms of when he should be doing those type of things," Tinkler said on SoccerBeat YouTube Channel.

"The game has evolved to such a degree that results are extremely important and sometimes players need to be a little bit more serious in terms of their profession and know when to exercise their ability and when not to.

"The position that he plays, as much as he sets up a lot of opportunities for others, I still think that he could be a little bit more valuable in terms of goals and assists, especially playing the role that he plays. In Europe, that's gonna be the main factor," the former Bafana Bafana midfielder concluded.

Maswanganyi has been touted as the successor to Themba Zwane for the number 10 role at Bafana Bafana.
