'They thought TS Galaxy were going to be a walkover'

A former Mamelodi Sundowns winger has shared his disappointment following the club's latest result that saw them surrender a 10-game winning run in the Betway Premiership.

In one of the biggest shocks of the 2024/25 season, Galaxy side beat log leaders Sundowns 1-0 to prevent the latter from opening a 12-point gap at the top.

Sebona feels The Brazilians' galaxy of stars were too relaxed going into Tuesday's encounter in Mbombela.

"Yeah, I was a little bit disappointed with what transpired yesterday," says Lucas Sebona, who went by the nickname 'Makhokhoba' during his playing days.

"Honestly, they looked disjointed. There was no combination. They tried to revive that with the substitutions they made, only to find that it was too late, the damage was already done.

"And the players that were given a chance yesterday, their communication was not so good.

"Kegan Johannes, when he goes forward, he takes time to fall back, so I was not happy with his recovery.

"You know what they say about changing a winning team, so in this case, Sundowns also came to Mbombela relaxed after their two or three impressive wins. They thought TS Galaxy were going to be a walkover," he added.

Sebona believes the plan was to rest the key players in the second half, but that once the game started to demand more, players such as Teboho Mokoena were forced to play the full 90.

"But all is not lost, I must emphasize. So far, we are still on track. We needed this wake-up call, to be honest. This result was to remind the guys that: 'We are not there yet'.

"Complacency will always creep in when you lead by 10 points or more. Some players tend to play sparingly and reserve their energy for African competitions.

"But because of the gap in points, I'm 110% sure Sundowns will still win the league this season."

The Tshwane giants now turn their attention to the Nedbank Cup, where they have Mpheni Home Defenders as Last 16 opponents on Sunday.
