Riveiro’s Nedbank Cup clean bill

Orlando Pirates' Nedbank Cup campaign this season will carry historic significance for Jose Riveiro as the premier knockout competition bounces in the Last 16 stage.

Pirates will be hosts on Saturday at Orlando Stadium against second-tier league club Baroka FC.

The Buccaneers are expected to 'strangle' their opponents out the competition and move into the quarterfinals as Riveiro seeks to write further history.

He won the Nedbank Cup in his first season and then defended it in his second, and now has his eyes on his third title.

In doing that, it means the Spaniard has not tasted defeat in 11 matches in this competition, which has included games against both Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs along with five lower division opposition.

Baroka will be the sixth lower division opponent for the 49-year-old mentor in this competition.

As he aims for his third consecutive title, Riveiro will be the first ever coach to lift this silverware with the same club three years in a row in the history of the competition.

Riveiro – who has won the MTN8 three years in a row – is into the final year of his contract, which will now propel him to becoming only the second ever coach to last three full seasons at the club.

The first was Rudi Krol (2008-2011).

What makes it better for the current Pirates coach is that he has already delivered five trophies and has three to chase this season.

He will also surpass the 118 games that Krol oversaw.

So much history at stake for Riveiro, who has been open with his emotions on the bench of late.

Riveiro has pending contract matters to iron out with the club, which will inform whether he continues at the Houghton-based outfit or leaves.
