Munetsi 'reacts' to EPL debut against Liverpool

Marshall Munetsi has reacted to making his Premier League debut in an encounter against Liverpool on Sunday.

Wolverhampton Wanderers suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Reds at Anfield, with the former Orlando Pirates star coming on as a substitute to make his much-anticipated debut.

When he came off the bench at the beginning of the second half, Liverpool were ahead by two goals courtesy of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah.

The Zimbabwean, meanwhile, was deployed in, perhaps, a more advanced position than he is accustomed to. It almost worked, however, as the 28-year-old had two opportunities to score.

The first, which came just a few minutes after he was introduced, saw him in a one-on-one situation with Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who saved the effort with his face.

Munetsi then had another chance later on in the match, but his shot flew wide of the target.

Speaking after the game, the Zimbabwe vice-captain stated that his side tried to put the home side under pressure and also revealed that he felt a push from Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk while he was on on one with Alisson.

"We tried our best. After the first half, the coach tried to make some changes to put them under pressure. We had a couple of chances and made them feel uncomfortable," the former Buccaneer said per BBC.

"The guys pushed to get the draw, but unfortunately, we could not get it. I got the through ball. Alisson is a really good goalkeeper and closed the angle but I got a slight push on the back. Unfortunately, I did not get off the mark but we are training all the time.

"As you get more chances and opportunities, you improve as a player. But right now, I am helping my teammates get the goals, trying to help them defend. There is still work to be done for us to get maximum points but it is a small step.

"In the first half, we did not cause them a lot of problems. But the second half is the identity of the team, it is what the coach wants.

"We knew it would not be easy coming to Liverpool but with the energy and intensity and respecting the opponent, we can get the results soon."
