Spurs choice for new assistant explained

Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has provided detailed insights into the reasoning behind the appointment of Benson Mhlongo into the club's bench.

Mhlongo has joined Spurs, where he is set to become assistant coach to Ernst Middendorp.

Having previously held a similar position at Orlando Pirates working alongside the likes of Muhsin Ertugral, Kjell Jonevret, and Milutin Sredojevic, he replaces Vasili Manousakis, who has left the club to become an assistant coach with the Kenyan national team under Benni McCarthy.

Mhlongo's contract with the second-tier outfit runs until the end of the current season.

"I don't know Benson Mhlongo personally, but we did our research, and we believe he can make a positive contribution to the club," admits Efstathiou, in conversation with KickOff.com.

"He brings a wealth of experience to our team and is a great leader. He has been in the game for many years, playing a significant leadership role, and he can educate our young players on doing the right things."

Efstathiou emphasized that the former Mamelodi Sundowns star has a lot to offer the club and noted that for now, his contract is set to run until the end of the season, after which they will assess the situation.

He also addressed Manousakis' departure, stating, "It's a good opportunity for him, and we are glad he got it. Obviously, we are not happy that he had to leave us, but that's football - sometimes it happens."

The Urban Warriors have managed to move away from bottom spot on the Motsepe Foundation Championship table, now sitting 14th.

"Towards the end of last year, we lost a lot of players to injuries," notes Efstathiou.
