Planning for the future? Chiefs hand contract to DDC star

Kaizer Chiefs have handed a professional contract to another promising youngster who will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of Mfundo Vilakazi and Mduduzi Shabalala in the DStv Diski Challenge.

The Soweto giants have not been shy to give youth a chance this season - Vilakazi, Shabalala, and Samkelo Zwane have all featured far more prominently in the current seasons than in previous ones.

They have further proved their faith in promotion from within the club by offering a DDC contract to one of the club's standout players from the reserves.

Kabelo Nkgwesa has signed his first contract with the club's reserves, a signal of intent from the Naturena-based outfit and perhaps a long-term strategy.

The news was confirmed by the players' representatives, Mscsports Talent, via social media platforms.

Like Vilakazi and Shabalala, Nkgwesa's stay in the DDC may not be a long one as the senior team battles to find a consistent left-back.

The Glamour Boys signed Bradley Cross and Bongani Sam ahead of the start of the season, but the former has failed to make a significant impact and nail down the role as his own, while the latter is yet to feature owing to injury troubles.

Head coach Nasreddine Nabi is, however, heaving a sigh of relief after Edmilson Dove returned to the pitch following an injury lay-off, but it is understood the club is keeping one eye on finding a long-term solution.

It would not be far-fetched to expect Nkgwesa's promotion to the first time to come sooner rather than later. The speedy left-back is seen as an exciting prospect and could be involved with the first team as early as next season.
