Esperance to hire new manager ahead of Sundowns clash?

With Esperance de Tunis reportedly set to sack head coach Laurentiu Reghecampf, a former manager looks poised to take over the reins ahead of their CAF Champions League match against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 49-year-old was appointed in November 2024 to succeed current Masandawana manager Miguel Cardoso. However, after disappointing results in the last five league matches, his tenure with Tunis has reportedly come to an end.

However, the club have not officially announced the coach's departure.

Interestingly and surprisingly, the Romanian coach was let go despite leading the team to the Champions League quarterfinals and being at the top of the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 standings.

Esperance are tied on 53 points with second-placed US Monastir, having scored more goals than the Capital of Ribat with just five games remaining before the 2024/25 season end.

According to various reports in Tunisia, ex-Esperance's coach Maher Kanzari, who is currently with Stade Tunisien, is in the lead to take over at Elias Mokwana's team.

If the 52-year-old ultimately becomes the new coach for Esperance, his first task will be against Sundowns, as the two teams are scheduled to meet in the CAF Champions League quarterfinal match in Tshwane on 1 April.
