VERDICT: Chiefs punched below the belt

At least one of the two goals scored by Richards Bay FC in a 2-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs should have been ruled offside, according to a former FIFA referee.

Chiefs' continental ambitions suffered another dent as they succumbed to troubled Richards Bay at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday.

Fezile Gcaba opened the scoring just three minutes after half-time, before Yanela Mbuthuma put the Soweto giants to the sword with just under 20 minutes left to play.

Reviewing the match on SABC Sport's Monday night TV show SoccerZone, Victor Hlungwani revealed that the home side's second goal should not have stood.

"Let's go to Mbuthuma, let's have a look to see if he gained an advantage by being in that position," said Hlungwani, while pointing to the screen for the benefit of slow motion.

"You can see the ball is played. Mbuthuma, as you can see, is in an offside position.

"Now, we look at the ball rebounding off the goalpost. When he plays it, he is offside. He is interfering or gaining an advantage by being in that position.

"So, this was ruled onside, the goal was given incorrectly because he gained an advantage by being in that position.

"It should have been ruled offside," he explained.

Amakhosi sit in eighth spot on the Betway Premiership log with just nine wins from 22 matches.

Meanwhile, the precious three points mean Richards Bay temporarily escape the relegation zone as they climb up to 11th.
