How Downs could be exposed without 8 internationals

With at least eight Mamelodi Sundowns players set to arrive late before the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal against Sekhukhune United on Friday, this website looks at how the side could line up.

Sundowns will feel inconvenienced yet again after their postponed Nedbank Cup clash against Sekhukhune was rescheduled to Friday evening at Lucas Moripe Stadium, three days after the end of the FIFA break.

That means their Bafana players may not feature , especially with a CAF Champions League quarterfinal against Esperance next Tuesday.

All of Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, Jayden Adams, Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas, Iqraam Rayners, and Thapelo Morena were with Hugo Broos' charges away to Benin (albeit in Ivory Coast) for a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday evening.

The national squad could arrive back in the country only on Thursday, and after playing back-to-back qualifiers, will definitely need a rest, with another trip to Tunisia scheduled after the Champions League first leg.

Masandawana, however, could have defenders Grant Kekana and Aubrey Modiba available after being withdrawn from the Bafana squad before the latest camp.

Peter Shalulile could also feature, as he last played for Namibia on Monday afternoon in a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Divine Lunga is a serious doubt, however, as he was involved in Zimbabwe's 1-1 draw against Nigeria in Uyo on Tuesday evening, having also played two consecutive qualifiers.

In goal, the Tshwane giants could rely on veteran Denis Onyango, while Zuko Mdunyelwa and Kegan Johannes will fight it out for a spot at right-back.

Should Modiba and Kekana be available, the defence could be completed by Malibongwe Khoza.

The midfield will be severely affected.

With Marcelo Allende is the only regular that stayed behind and the side could struggle especially defensively, with other options such Sphelele Mkhulise, Neo Maema, and Kutlwano Letlhaku attacking players.

On the wings, The Brazilians have Tashreeq Matthews and Thapelo Maseko available, while up front Arthur Sales could partner Shalulile.

However, they will have a very thin bench should their internationals not feature, which is something Eric Tinkler's charges could look to capitalize on.

The Chloorkop-based outfit were knocked out of the Carling Knockout last season by TS Galaxy on penalties after they played without their internationals, in a match that was scheduled a day after the FIFA week.
