Extra incentive for Pirates, Downs CAF CL double-header

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates will be chasing additional ranking bragging rights in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals double-header on Tuesday.

The much-awaited Champions League last eight stage gets underway on Tuesday, with Sundowns set to host Esperance in the first leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium (15:00).

Pirates, meanwhile, have their first leg at 21:00 on the same day, away to MC Alger of Algeria.

Although both of South Africa's representatives will be looking to gain advantage ahead of the second legs in a week's time, both clashes present also the opportunity to settle scores in the Africa club rankings.

According to FootballDatabase website, The Brazilians are currently ranked second on the continent, just 11 points ahead of third-placed Esperance.

The encounter between the Tshwane giants and The Red and Yellow will go a long way in who gets closer to first place, held by Al Ahly.

The Club of the Century, currently 54 points ahead of Masandawana, will be at home to Al Hilal Omdurman in their quarterfinal first leg on Tuesday night.

Bucs, on the other hand, have been consistently climbing up the rankings, especially after qualifying for the knockout stages for the first time since 2013.

They were in top form in the group stage, going through top of their pool and unbeaten.

As a result, Jose Riveiro's charges have climbed up to 11th in Africa and are just two points behind 10th-placed MC Alger.

Should the Soweto giants emerge victorious, by the time the rankings are updated next week Monday, they would have leapfrogged the Champions League 1976 winners into the top 10 positions.

Pirates will have no time to rest as they resume their Betway Premiership campaign away to Polokwane City on Saturday, before the second leg at Orlando next Wednesday.

Sundowns were scheduled to play against Stellenbosch FC in the league on Saturday, but that game has been postponed as they travel to Tunisia for the second leg next week Tuesday.
