Chiefs reach new low in Africa club rankings

Kaizer Chiefs' latest Betway Premiership loss has seen them plunge further in the African club rankings.

It appears Chiefs could be fighting to stay in the Top Eight rather than compete for a CAF Confederation Cup spot, after they suffered their 10th defeat of the league season, following a 2-1 loss to Golden Arrows on Saturday.

With only six points separating them and third-placed Stellenbosch FC, Nasreddine Nabi's men were hopeful of fighting to return to a continental tournament, especially with the head coach's experience in that space, having reached the final in July 2023 with Young Africans, who lost to USM Alger.

However, his team remains stuck in eighth place and those hopes of a continental finish were dented, as Stellies have have a game in hand.

Before the game against Abafana Bes'thende, they had plunged to 100th place in the Africa club rankings, as per Footballdatabase website, after a 2-0 defeat to Richards Bay FC, and were ranked eighth in the country.

Following the latest defeat, Amakhosi are now ranked 108th in Africa by the aforesaid publication, which updates its rankings weekly.

They remain eighth in South Africa.

The likes of Stellenbosch, TS Galaxy, SuperSport United, and Sekhukhune United are currently ranked higher than the Soweto giants.

Galaxy only dropped to 78th position after a 2-1 defeat to Marumo Gallants on Sunday.

Babina Noko, who were in the CAF Confederation Cup for a second successive season, are at this moment ranked 94th after not taking part in league matches over the weekend.

Stellenbosch only slipped down to 46th following a 1-0 defeat to Magesi FC on Saturday.
