Man Utd held by Man City in disappointing derby

The final Manchester derby of the season failed to produce a winner as Manchester United and Manchester City played to a goalless draw at Old Trafford.

Rasmus Hojlund returned to lead the line in place of Joshua Zirkzee and Harry Maguire stepped in for Matthijs de Ligt after the loss to Nottingham Forest, while Kevin De Bruyne, Mateo Kovacic, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden earned a recall by City.

The latter nearly carved out the breakthrough in the opening-quarter following a short run-up to the area, but goalkeeper Andre Onana managed to cover his lines.

Both defences were extremely tight at this point as Ruben Dias hurried back to make a timeous intervention and thwart Alejandro Garnacho profiting from the head.

In light of the purposed start, the telling moments specifically in attack weren't in great supply but were extremely reduced by both defences.

Ex-German international Ilkay Gundogan targeted the opener late in the half from way out after a one-two with Kovacic, but he went well wide of the mark.

Foden got a perfect chance to get the visitors ahead two minutes in the second period, but a disappointing first touch squandered it all.

The English star was unable to continue playing the remainder of the clash as he was withdrawn for Jeremy Doku just before the hour mark.

Ruben Amorim's men looked to make use of the set-plays a little later with a telling supply from a corner by Bruno Fernandes, but the Cityzens cleared their lines.

Onana was called to action in the closing quarter where he had to pull across his area to direct a half-volley from Omar Marmoush into touch.

The Red Devils launched a care too as substitute Zirkzee charged onto a surging cross from Patrick Dorgu to hit first-time only for Ederson to parry, as the encounter ended all square in Manchester.
