Ertugral on to second Soweto giant bite

For all the years that Muhsin Ertugral has coached in South Africa, the end of his first week since his latest return will have both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on the board.

Ertugral has taken over at Cape Town City until the end of the season and started with a win against his former club Chiefs on Sunday.

Next up is Orlando Pirates on Wednesday (19:30) at the same venue – the DHL Cape Town Stadium.

As he prepares for The Buccaneers, Ertugral will look back at his journey against Amakhosi, where he had two spells.

After his first stint at Naturena, the Turkish-born coach had a seven-league game stay at Santos through the beginning of 2003 and coincidentally played Chiefs twice.

He drew at home and then lost away to Chiefs in what was his last game in charge on February 16 at Olympia Park, before moving to his next job at Club Africain in Tunisia.

During the 2006/07 season at Ajax Cape Town, he drew and lost against the Glamour Boys in the league, before returning to Naturena for his second stint.

He won and drew against Orlando Pirates during that season.

Then in his second stint at Ajax, it was a win, draw, and defeat, before leaving for Turkish club Sivasspor.

After that, it was Golden Arrows, where it was a goalless draw in his one match against Amakhosi, before landing back at the Urban Warriors for his third stint in April 2013.

His first game in charge was a famous 3-1 win over Chiefs, which marked the start of a successful relegation escape.

Another win against the Soweto giants was added to his name, before he then left at the end of the year.

Next stop for Ertugral was Mpumalanga Black Aces, where he was in charge for the 2015/16 season, coming out with one draw and two defeats.

Then, in his short stay at Pirates, he recorded a draw in the Soweto Derby, before going back to Ajax, where he suffered defeat to Chiefs on the day the club was relegated in May 2018.

With Maritzburg, Ertugral never played against the men in Gold and Black and now has to deal with Pirates as he sends reminders about his experience in the Betway Premiership.
