Double up for Ngezana in Europa League

Siyabonga Ngezana is living it up in Europe like none of his Bafana Bafana teammates with the Europa League Last 16 coming with significance for him.

Ngezana is due to report for Bafana duty on March 17 for FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho on March 21 and Benin four days later, which will be played in Cote d'Ivoire.

Before the thought of international duty, the towering defender has Europa League duties with his Romanian club FCSB against Lyon.

The two-legged Europa League Last 16 tie against the seven-time French champions will be played on Thursday in Bucharest for the first leg and then a week on for the second leg.

Of interest is that should Ngezana play the match this Thursday or next, then he will take his appearance count in the Europa League to double numbers just for this season.

Ngezana has so far played nine matches in Europe's second-tier club competition, including games against Manchester United and Glasgow Rangers.

After playing twice in the qualifying round, the 27-year-old then featured in five of the eight group stage matches, plus both games in the knockout phase play-offs.

Ngezana will have good reason to take pride in having featured in at least 10 games in his first season playing in the Europa League.

He has played another five matches in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers this season with that journey ending one round before the group stage.

The former Kaizer Chiefs man has played 31 games in all competitions two years in a row at FCSB, who are on course to defend their Romanian league title.

FCSB will play either Real Sociedad or Manchester United in the quarterfinals if they get past Lyon in the Last 16.

The plus for Ngezana is that appearances in the Europa League at this stage will come with a further increase in his value.
