"I think that all of us weren't up for it and did not have the absolute will to show that we wanted to tear something down here at the World Cup," Neuer said after the shock 2-0 defeat to South Korea.
"Even if it had worked out today it would have been over for us in the knock-out phase in the next game or the game after."
The comments of Die Mannschaft captain perfectly set the tone for the mood within the camp of the European giants with Mats Hummels further adding that their performance levels have been sub-standard for some time now.
"The last game where we were convincing was in autumn 2017, that is quite a while ago," Hummels said.
"It's the biggest sporting disappointment of my life. We weren't at the level you need for a World Cup."
"If you go out in this tough way you have to take responsibility and we are doing that 100 percent. I am the first to do that and as a result, we have to live with the consequences."
Sami Khedira further added onto the drop in standards: "Our requirements were certainly not to beat Saudi Arabia 2-1 or lose to Austria (in pre-World Cup friendlies).
"We couldn't get back on track. The whole team has to take responsibility but foremost the leading players, but definitely not today."
