Kannemeyer questions CHAN squad criteria

Former South African international David Kannemeyer has criticised the criteria used for selecting the squad for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.

His comments come after the announcement of Bafana Bafana's squad for the CHAN qualifiers by assistant coach Helman Mkhalele last week.

Bafana will host Egypt in the first leg at the Free State Stadium on 28 February 2025, with the return leg taking place on 9 March.

Kannemeyer believes that the CHAN opportunity is not being utilised effectively by the continent and its football associations, with the tournament designed for players who compete in their respective domestic leagues.

"It's pointless. If you look at the squad already, I'm really unsure," Kannemeyer told KickOff.

"If we have younger players playing in Europe who are not included in this squad, then there's something wrong.

"It would only make sense to bring those younger players back to help them adjust to African football and culture.

"I cannot blame anyone between CAF and SAFA, and I don't know the criteria used for selecting these players. I'm not sure what we are trying to build with this team.

"It could have been a great opportunity for coach Hugo Broos to assess these young players who are performing well abroad.

"It often seems like the selection is based on whoever is available. I often hear about some Under-17 scouts having a say in these selections... but who are these scouts? As former professionals, we are not involved in our respective provinces.

"So, who are these scouts working for SAFA and our football? We don't get recognition or respect.

"That's why I'm saying I don't know how the squad was chosen or based on what criteria."
