CAF draw, Pirates and Downs told: You can't pick and choose

Katlego Mashego, former striker of both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, reveals why he is in favour of a CAF Champions League quarterfinal match between the two teams.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will conduct the quarterfinal draw for both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup today in Doha, Qatar.

PSL pair Pirates and Sundowns could end up facing each other in the two-legged quarterfinals, a scenario many fans of these clubs do not appear too keen on.

However, 'Mahoota' sees it differently.

"This is the stage of the Champions League where you can't pick and choose your opponent," says Mashego.

"You have to accept whoever you get and move forward. The main goal is to progress to the final of the Champions League.

"As a country, our biggest wish is to see two South African clubs compete in the Champions League final. However, if that doesn't happen, we must accept it.

"If these two teams do face each other in the quarterfinals, then so be it. It would be unfortunate, but there's nothing we can do," he continues.

Mashego says he has no specific preference regarding the match-ups as anything can happen in the tournament.

"If they play against each other, we will have the opportunity to watch two South African teams compete twice to advance to the next stage of the Champions League and reach the semi-finals.

"But of course, our ultimate desire is to make it to the final."
