Chiefs advance in NBK Cup with controversial win

Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup with a 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC on Saturday evening.

Chiefs named a few changes following the win over Magesi FC, as Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Thabo Cele, Gaston Sirino and Ashley Du Preez returned to the fold.

Angolan-born Inacio Miguel put the visitors ahead in the opening quarter with a coolly taken penalty after a hand-ball by Ismail Toure in the six-yard box.

Maroons pushed for an immediate response and came close when Chumani Butsaka side-footed a cutback to the edge of the area narrowly over the top.

The moments didn't stop coming though for the Maroons who still piled on the pressure and forced their fancied adversaries to sit deep – on the edge of their defensive area.

Both teams continued to have a go at each other after the break, as the Maroons had their work cut out in staging a comeback.

The eagerness from the host remained a little in the final quarter and saw a glancing header by Sihle Ndluli force Bruce Bvuma to produce a save.

Maroons were rewarded five minutes to the end when a floated corner picked out Andre De Jong who nodded in off the base of the far-post.

With time running out, the Amakhosi introduced Dillon Solomons for Cele and removed Reeve Frosler for Mfundo Vilakazi.

Chiefs snatched the lead in additional time when Pule Mmodi reacted swiftly to a loose ball in the area following a corner and tucked in from close-range. There was some confusion as the goal looked to be ruled out but after referee consulted with the assistant, the goal was awarded.

Vilakazi put the icing on the cake late in added time as a mis-clearance from a corner allowed him to run clean through for an easy finish, seeing the clash to a close.
