Riveiro speaks after Pirates bombshell

Jose Riveiro, who is into his last three months as an Orlando Pirates gaffer, has spoken for the first time on his decision that took a lot of fans by surprise.

Pirates confirmed, via a statement released on Thursday afternoon, that Riveiro would not be renewing his current contract with the club, which is due for expiration at the end of June.

While the Bucs faithful will likely still be suffering a hangover from the news, the Spaniard has taken to explaining his mental state as he takes measured steps towards the exit gate.

"My priority right now is on our upcoming match against Polokwane City. This is a tough match. A match that needs our undivided attention and focus.

"The time will come for me to express myself on the decision I have made, but now isn't that time because we have a job to do," Riveiro told the club's website.

"The season is far from over and we have a lot of work to do between now and the end of May. Obviously, in an ideal world, one would have wanted to hold on making any statements until the end of the season but it's not possible.

"The club needs to plan for its future and it's only fair that they are given time to do so," he added.

Meanwhile, club chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza expressed his gratitude to the man who collected five trophies in just two-and-a-half seasons at the club, while chasing three more trophies at the business end of the current campaign.

Pirates are in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup, the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League and are in a league title race with Mamelodi Sundowns.

"While we would have liked José to extend his stay with us, at the same time, we fully respect his decision. We are grateful for everything he has done for the Club.

"We appreciate the three years of service that José has given this institution and fully support his decision. Wherever his journey takes him, he must know that the Orlando Pirates family will always be behind him," declared Dr. Khoza.

The Polokwane City encounter is at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday (18:00).
