Surman, O'Brien share spoils in UK action

In the Championship, there were draws for both Andrew Surman and Burton O'Brien as Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday shared the spoils with Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion, respectively.

Surman replaced the injured Nathan Dyer in the 56th minute and apart from curling a left-footed shot past the upright 30 minutes later, the Johannesburg-born midfielder created very few chances as Wolves piled on the pressure. In the end there were no goals but the 19 856 fans were well entertained by the two fellow-promotional hopefuls.

Wednesday travelled to second-placed Albion and despite having only 37 percent ball possession, managed to claw a much-deserved 1-1 against the Baggies.

O'Brien was in the thick of action, taking a number of direct free kicks as well as in-swinging and out-swinging corners, which almost resulted in goals. He was also involved in two first-half fouls and with the score at 0-0, and replaced in the 72nd minute.

Three minutes later, Albion netted but Wednesday fought back with a late equaliser to stun the home crowd.

Justin Miller was not in the Port Vale side that crashed to yet another League One defeat against Crewe Alexandra.

The Railwaymen scored their winner in the 76th minute to bring more doom and gloom to Vale's fans and their new manager.

The club is now deep in the relegation quagmire with only 11 points from 15 games.

In League Two, Glynn Hurst's Bury were beaten 2-1 by a determined Rotherham United in front of a crowd of only 3 425.

The former Amaglug-glug player had a busy evening until he was substituted in the 59th minute, having put a number of crosses into the box and being ruled off sides on three occasions.

And just before half time when he was fouled in the box, a teammate netted the resulting penalty.

Bally Smart's Milton Keynes Dons continue to ride the crest of a wave and are now four points clear at the top of the League Two table, following a 2-0 home win against Grimsby Town before a much better turnout of 6 797.

He only played for the last 13 minutes by which time the Dons were cruising, after opening their account as early as the 30-second mark.
