No Maswanganyi? Footballer of the Season race down to final THREE

The race for the prestigious PSL Footballer of the Season award is now down to just three outstanding players, as the PSL has confirmed the final list of nominees, which may raise eyebrows in some quarters. 

An annual debate that has dominated the back pages in recent months is set to come to a culmination with the three names nominated for the PSL Footballer of Season award having now been revealed.

The Mamelodi Sundowns duo Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams make the final three for a second consecutive season, while Stellenbosch FC striker Iqraam Rayners completes the list of this season's candidates for the big accolade.

Mokoena has made 35 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring five goals and providing five assists. The 27-year-old won the award last season and could join a short list of players, like Teko Modise and Peter Shalulile, who have bagged it back-to-back.

Williams also makes a return to the final three having been nominated last season. The Bafana Bafana number one has made an impressive 44 appearances in all competitions this season, keeping 30 clean sheets in the process.

The 32-year-old has already received backing from head coach Rulani Mokwena to be the number one candidate for the award, as well as from rival camp Kaizer Chiefs, as Bruce Bvuma also expressed his endorsement for the Gqeberha native.

Rayners, meanwhile, makes a first appearance for the award at this year's edition. He has been one of the breakthrough stars of the 2023/24 campaign, with the 28-year-old having contributed 16 goals and 8 assists from 38 appearances in all competitions thus far.

In what could come as somewhat a surprise for many in the football community, Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi did not make the cut.

This despite making the final three in the Players' Player of the Season category voted for by players. Important to note, the PSL Footballer of the Season award nominees are voted for by the 16 Premier Division coaches, as confirmed by the PSL in a statement on Friday.
