AFCON boss backs Mourinho to take top job in Europe

A 2023 Africa Cup of Nations coach has backed Jose Mourinho to land arguably one of the most prized jobs in Europe.

Mourinho has been without a job since being sacked by AS Roma last month after two and a half years in charge.

During his time at the club, the self-anointed "Special One" guided the Giallorossi to two European finals – he guided them to triumph in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa Conference League and then, the following term, he steered the side to a runners-up finish in the Europa League.

Having since been relieved of his duties in Rome following a tun of poor results this season, he has been linked with possibly replacing Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel, who is facing mounting pressure amid the Bundesliga team's floundering performances.

Meanwhile, the FC Barcelona job is also set to be vacant at the end of the season, with Xavi Hernandez having also announced his impending departure, and AFCON finalist with Nigeria, Jose Peseiro, has now backed Mourinho for the Blaugrana hot seat.

"I'm Portuguese, a good friend of Mourinho... I like Mou. We were together at university, we met many times to talk about football. He gave me tickets when I was at Barcelona," he told Spanish publication Sport.

"When [Carlos] Queiroz called me to go to Madrid [as his assistant], the first one I called was Mourinho, not my wife.

"Of course, I also like [Pep] Guardiola, his fantasy. They are different in their way of winning, but they win.

"I would like Mourinho to go to coach Barça, he has to be in a team to win everything, because he is a winner."

With Mourinho having previously managed the Blaugrana's biggest rivals Real Madrid, Peseiro was then asked if he would be the right man to step into the hot seat at the Camp Nou.

"What is the problem?" he replied

"In the end, it is training. I'm sure he would do well because of the demands he places on everything and everyone around him day after day, every minute, to build a team to win."
