Al Ahly leapfrog Pirates to edge closer to quarter-finals

Al Ahly moved to the top of Group C in the CAF Champions League with a 3-1 victory over Stade d' Abidjan on Saturday evening.

Following last weekend's set-back in Algeria, the holders looked for redemption and recalled Akram Tawfik, Hussien El Shahat and Emam Ashour.

Wessam Abou Ali was fired up from the get-go with a teasing shot from the left of the area fizzling narrowly wide of the mark.

Abou Ali again posed danger for the Ivorians in the opening seconds where he flashed an inviting chance from close-range agonizingly beyond the intended target.

It all happened in the first couple of minutes as the host got up themselves before Mohamed El Shenawy popped up to thwart Saint-Jean Kore's angled header.

Kore got clear though a few minutes to the half-hour mark with a rasping shot from the area that got the better of El Shenawy and made the breakthrough.

Ahly were desperate to hit back before the break and got a succession of opportunities to go level through Amr El Soleya, Abou Ali and Ashour but none of the players were able to convert.

Karim El Debes made way for Mohamed Magdy Afsha before Karim Walid pulled on the field of play for Amr El Solia in a double alteration for the visitors ahead of the second half.

The refreshed approach inspired the current kings of the continent, who were back on level terms as Abou Ali's downward header coincided perfectly with Ashour to stab in from close-range.

Ashour was on hand again with another decent finish from around the six-yard area as the host went to sleep at the back to complete the turnaround for Al Ahly.

Stade expectantly didn't lose hope despite trailing the more fancied counterparts, but battled immensely to salvage something as the minutes ticked on.

However, the Cairo Red Devils didn't drop momentum but added a third goal, with Ashour showing more composure in the box to fire in a teasing delivery and completed his hat-trick.

The record holders ensured the victory and they will qualify for the quarter-finals if Orlando Pirates beat CR Belouizdad.
