Ex-EPL star takes aim at African league - 'It's a mess'

A former Premier League star has criticised an African league, calling it a "mess" based on his own personal experience.

Sulley Muntari, the ex-Ghana international who once graced the pitches of Europe's elite leagues, has delivered a scathing critique of the current state of the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

The former Hearts of Oak midfielder described the league as a "mess" and expressed frustration at the lack of progress within the domestic game.

Muntari, who played for EPL sides Sunderland and Portsmouth, as well as Italian giants Inter Milan and AC Milan, returned to Ghanaian football in February 2022, signing for Hearts of Oak.

However, his stint in the GPL lasted only a few months, as he retired in July that year. Reflecting on his time in the league, the UEFA Champions League winner did not hold back.

"I enjoyed it. Hearts fans and the president were amazing," Muntari acknowledged per Africa Top Sports.

"But the league is a big hole where they are dumping money. There is no future for the local league. I am hoping I can get some funds and really help them.

"It's a mess. When I was there, it was a mess. Maybe now it is worse. If we don't help these guys, we won't get the top players."

The veteran midfielder pointed to poor infrastructure and inadequate resources as some of the major issues plaguing the league. He painted a grim picture of the conditions players face on a regular basis, calling for urgent intervention.

"The changing rooms smell. That respect is not there. I didn't even want my laundry done. I would take it home. When you get into changing rooms, they smell bad. It is not just one team. Everybody," Muntari said.

The former midfielder believes that without significant changes, Ghana risks losing its ability to develop top football talent capable of competing on the global stage.

"It's not just about the players but also the entire system. If we don't fix this, we'll struggle to produce top players for years to come," he warned.
