Italy step up pursuit to send Robinho to jail

Italian authorities have now stepped up their pursuit to arrest former Brazil star Robinho and have him sent to jail.

In January 2022, Robinho was sentenced to nine years in prison by an Italian court for his role in a violent sexual assault at a Milan nightclub in 2013.

The 39-year-old is said to have been part of a group of men who gang-raped a woman at the Sio Cafe nightclub.

However, with Robinho still in Brazil and the South American nation having a policy of not extraditing their citizens, the player has been free from serving his sentence as long as he remains in the country.

According to ESPN, however, Italian authorities have now requested that the retired footballer serve his nine-year sentence in his home nation.

Brazil's Foreign Relations Ministry has confirmed that a request has been submitted to this effect, but refused to reveal the name of the person in question.

The report adds that the request will be analysed by the Justice Ministry's Department of Asset Repatriation and International Legal Cooperation in Brazil before a decision is made.

Earlier this month, Italy's Justice Ministry issued an international arrest warrant for the former Real Madrid star, who has maintained his innocence throughout.

His conviction for rape was confirmed by an appeals court in 2020 and reaffirmed by Italy's Supreme Court last month.
