JUST IN: Rooney's new job confirmed!

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has officially landed a new managerial job!

The 37-year-old makes his return to England after being announced as EFL Championship side Birmingham City's newest boss.

Rooney's appointment on a three-and-a-half-year contract comes after he departed from his role at MLS side DC United earlier this week.

The former England captain took over the Black-and-Red in July last year, and went on to improve their points tally from the previous season, finishing the latest campaign with 40 points, but narrowly missed out on the 2023 MLS Cup play-offs, leading to the mutual decision to part ways. 

Per Birmingham CEO Garry Cook, the Championship side's appointment of the former United man is a "defining moment for the football club". 

"When the opportunity presents itself to appoint a manager who shares your ambition and is both a student and a great of the game, then you act. This is what we have done," he told the club's official website. 

"We are confident that his appointment, supported by his hand-picked coaching staff, will culminate in a young, attack-minded team that will excite our fans."

Rooney's support staff will include current England U21 assistant coach Ashley Cole, former Red Devils teammate John O'Shea, Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth, who have both followed the former striker from DC United. 

The former Derby County manager has since expressed his determination to cultivate a winning environment at his new club. 

"We have some exciting young players in the squad, and some who are still to break through into the first team, alongside a core of experienced senior professionals," Rooney said.

"I have a clear way that I want the team to play, and my coaching staff and I will work hard to implement it. We will create a winning culture here with an identity that gets Blues fans on their feet."
