Kenya star on Benni's instant impact

A Kenya star has detailed some of the big changes by new Harambee head coach Benni McCarthy to ensure strikers prosper under his leadership.

The Bafana Bafana icon was appointed as the new Harambee Stars coach earlier this month, given the responsibility to bring happiness to the Kenyan people.

Omondi was included in the Kenya preliminary squad by the former Manchester United striker trainer ahead of the two critical 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Gabon and Gambia.

While acknowledging that he did not anticipate a call-up, Omondi has emphasized that McCarthy has already made a notable impact and disclosed how the coach engages with his players.

However, the 21-year-old attacker has unfortunately did not make it to the final squad as the Cape Town-born tactician revealed the team for these two important encounters.

"He asked the three of us to remain behind so as to share tips aimed at improving our finishing,'' Omondi said per Mozzart Sport

''He took us through some drills and urged us to improve on our striking. He wants us to be comfortable with the ball and pass it around with ease. I have been enjoying his training sessions and how he encourages me to fine-tune my scoring instincts.

"In fact, he wants me take on players more and improve on the skill. I have noticed that he does not discourage players from showing their strengths.

"I was not expecting the call-up at all. I learnt of it through my sister. We were at my mother's place in Dandora when she logged on to social media and realized that I had been included in the provisional team. I did not believe it until I saw a post on the Harambee Stars pages."

Kenya will take on Gambia on Thursday, March 20, 2025, followed by a match against Gabon at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi three days later.
